About TNBC

What does "Triple Negative" mean?

  • Triple Negative Breast Cancer or TNBC is a type of breast cancer that doesn’t have estrogen or progesterone receptors, and the HER2 oncogene is negative or not overexpressed.
  • Because those receptors aren’t present, hormone-blocking drugs and HER2-targeted medicines don’t work for TNBC.
  • It can still be successfully treated! Plans often include chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and, when appropriate, immunotherapy or other targeted options.
  • Your plan is personal. It’s based on your tumor features, stage, health, and preferences.

Your Treatment Options

There's so much to learn, and we're here to help you understand what path is right for you. Use the summary below to begin understanding some of your options, then dive into our Treatment Options page to learn more.

Medicines that travel through your bloodstream to kill cancer cells. May be given before surgery (neoadjuvant) or after (adjuvant) depending on your plan.

  • What it is: Cancer-fighting medicines given by IV or pills.
  • When it’s used: Before surgery to shrink tumors or after surgery to lower risk of return.
  • Ask your team: Goals, schedule, likely side effects, support meds.

Removes the cancer (lumpectomy or mastectomy) and checks lymph nodes (sentinel node biopsy). Your chemo response can shape the surgical plan.

  • What it is: Lumpectomy vs. mastectomy; sentinel node biopsy for staging.
  • When it’s used: After chemo if given first, or up front in some plans.
  • Ask your team: Breast-conserving vs. mastectomy, margins, recovery, reconstruction.

Focused energy to lower the chance of cancer returning in the breast/chest wall or nodes. Common after lumpectomy; sometimes after mastectomy based on risk.

  • What it is: Targeted treatment to reduce recurrence risk.
  • When it’s used: Usually after lumpectomy; considered after mastectomy for higher-risk features.
  • Ask your team: Areas treated, number of sessions, skin care during treatment.

Medicines that help your immune system find cancer cells or deliver chemo directly (antibody-drug conjugates). Eligibility depends on tumor features and stage.

  • What it is: Immunotherapy and antibody-drug conjugates used in specific TNBC situations.
  • Who may benefit: Based on tumor testing and prior treatments.
  • Ask your team: Tests needed (e.g., PD-L1), how it’s given, side-effect monitoring.
